About the class

Many of us use social media every day without considering the fact that our actions and behaviors online can shape how other people see us. This informative session will empower you to use social media actively to build a personal brand that feels authentic to your IRL (in real life) self. We’ll go over best practices, dos and don’ts, examples, resources, and more.

We are so excited to have you teaching at 540WMain for the first time. What can folks expect from your class and why should they buy tickets?
EHL: People can expect to learn how to think about their own personal brand- from why it’s important, to what it is right now, to where they want to go with it in the future. We’ll talk about how to use social media to get started building your brand, and we’ll do some exercises to help you brainstorm what you want your personal brand to be like. Folks should buy tickets if they want to spend some time thinking about their online persona and learning how to develop it thoughtfully.

What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned in your work as a content writer/strategist?
EHL: A common theme these days is the importance of authenticity. People can tell if you’re being fake online, and being real is crucial. The relationships we build online are very real, even if they’re digitally based, so behaving with integrity online in a way that’s consistent with our real-world selves is so important.

How do you balance not spending too much time on social media when so much of your work is digital?
EHL: It’s definitely challenging! I use an app called Forest, which allows me to grow digital trees. If you touch your phone, the tree dies! It’s a good motivator to stay off your phone and get deep work done. I also try to leave my phone in another room when I’m reading, and I leave it at home when I walk my dogs.

What project are you most excited about that coming up?
EHL: In the new year, I’ll be doing some content writing for a higher education client that should be a lot of fun! I’m looking forward to that project, since I have a master’s in higher education administration.

What are you doing for the holidays?
EHL: My husband and I will be local for a bit with my family before heading down to New Jersey to celebrate with my in-laws. Hopefully we’ll be giving lots of gifts made in Rochester and spending some time relaxing with our dogs.
