Dear Community,
As we approach the end-of-year giving season, I want to express my thoughts and the reality of fundraising for our nonprofit, 540WMain. Fundraising, a necessity for survival, often feels conflicting in the face of societal inequities and the capitalistic framework governing philanthropy. This year, the challenges are magnified by the lingering effects of COVID-19, inflation, and systemic issues that have affected 540 operations in an unprecedented way.
The pandemic exposed and exacerbated deep-seated inequalities, affecting various sectors and communities, especially those historically marginalized. Despite these challenges, 540WMain has remained steadfast in our mission to provide antiracist education. Our work is both personal and taxing, yet crucial in combating structural racism and advocating for social justice.
As we reflect on 2023, it’s clear that this year has been even more challenging than last. We’ve faced difficult decisions, including laying off two full-time staff members and leaving our team at its bare minimum. Revenue has continued to decrease, and frankly, the fervor for antiracism causes that we saw three years ago has waned. This shift has deeply affected our operations and our ability to maintain our crucial work in antiracism education.
