Introduction to Community Land Trusts

Community Land Trusts are democratic community organizations that develop and steward permanently affordable land and housing. The first CLT was created by Black Civil Rights Activists in the late 1960s in Georgia who believed that collective ownership and control of land could be the foundation for liberation and self-determination.

About the course

Since then, the CLT model has spread throughout the world, with more than 260 CLTs currently in existence throughout the US and dozens more across the world. Many organizers have adapted the CLT model to fight gentrification and develop communities without displacing long-time residents. This session will explore the history of the CLT movement, how CLTs fight gentrification and displacement, the ways different communities have used CLTs in creative, powerful ways, and share the work of Rochester’s own CLT, City Roots.
