5th Annual Black History Month Campaign

Dear Community,

This year marks our fifth consecutive Black History Month digital education campaign. Every February since 2018 (2018, 2019, 2020, 2021) we have highlighted the achievements and oft erased contributions of Black Americans and peoples across the African diaspora here on 540Blog. I am continually fascinated by the relevance and vitality of this campaign and this year is no exception.

As I type, teachers, educators, schools, cultural institutions, and scholars are facing an outright attack from policymakers, media pundits, and politicians that are anti any teaching or education about the enduring legacy of chattel slavery on our culture and society. These attacks are taking place in Congress, state senates, school board meetings, and online. Governors are passing legislation to ban books written by Black authors from school libraries and are trying to bury any mention (or perceived mention) of critical race theory from the public lexicon. For this reason, our 2022 campaign is more essential than ever before.

What to Expect

You can expect to learn from an amazing roster of community members that have written powerful essays and blogs. Stories that tell the experiences of Black and brown people that have literally changed the course of history. This collection of stories and writings will call out, call in and highlight the joy and pain that comes with being unapologetically Black. We hope that you follow us and share these stories on all social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and our newsletter.
