In this class & panel we will consider how to engage in discussions about race and racism with children.

overview:

In this class & panel we will consider how to engage in discussions about race and racism with children when mainstream American culture is constructed to justify and defend racial inequality. Participants will learn about the “soft” ways in which discussions about race are derailed by our adherence to a culture that reifies white supremacy and learn how to teach, identify, deflect, and resist cultural racism schemas that maintain racial inequality without mentioning race

 

what you’ll learn:

  • a definition of “colorblind racism” and why the idea behind it is harmful
  • how to engage in developmentally appropriate conversations about racism structural racism with children
  • strategies for responding to people in your life that profess to “not see color”
  • strategies to teach children on how to respond to covert and overt racism and racist remarks
  • ways to educate oneself to be more aware understanding about structural racism
